David Guetta’s 5 Best Collabs with American Artists

25 Jun

Calvin Harris and Avicii can STFU – David Guetta was the original Euro-transplant pioneering EDM in American pop music before you even realized you’d heard him before.

Remember 2009’s little hit “I Gotta Feeling” by the Black Eyed Peas? The song that holds the record for selling the most digital copies of any song ever? Yeah, that was produced by him.

And who tapped into the Aussie vocal talent that is Sia long before Flo Rida ever called her up to sing a hook? Right. Also Guetta.

And long before the producer ventured into the bizarro landscape of American Top 40 (which, compared to international charts, was severely lacking in dance music until about two years ago), he was making a name for himself in Europe with over 40 charting singles, including 18 top ten hits in his native France.

Now how does that make Avicii, who hasn’t even released his debut album yet, look? Sigh.

Guetta was the first to master the art of the American pop collab, which successfully broke him into the U.S. market and paved the way for all the Calvin Harris-es to come.

Here my top 5 Guetta collaborations with American artists. Let’s get nostalgic for 2010, y’all.

5. “When Love Takes Over,” featuring Kelly Rowland

4. “Missing You,” featuring Novel (son of Motown’s Mickey Stevenson)

3. “Where Them Girls At,” featuring Nicki Minaj and Flo Rida

2. “Sexy Bitch (Chick),” featuring Akon

1. “Who’s that Bitch (Chick),” featuring Rihanna

*BONUS*

“Stay,” featuring gospel singer Chris Willis

Also, can we talk about how solid Guetta is at holding his own against 20-something singers in music videos, despite being a married, 45-year-old father of two? Yeah.

Pop Stars React to Boston Marathon Bombing

16 Apr

As some of you may know, this is a Boston-based blog.

I’m not here to rant and rave about yesterday’s events, because there is really not much more to be said. A feeling has swept over the city that is really indescribable – it’s something that anyone who has ever been to Boston, or lived here, would not believe. It takes a lot to get Bostonians down, but what matters is how we get back up.

I want to take a little time to acknowledge and thank those in the global community for the outpour of support to those affected, and share some of our favorite pop stars’ messages to the people of Boston:

Get the Look: Nicki Minaj in “High School”

8 Apr

Get the Look!

I need to get back on track with the regular blogging, BUT for some reason I really enjoy doing these “Get the Looks.”

I think it’s because I’m a secret fashionphile and when I can watch a music video and recognize over half of the pieces worn (and know the designer and season they’re from), like, I want to put that talent to good use SOMEHOW. WHY NOT. I also like spending time scouring clothing sites for items to feature and rationalizing it by calling it “blogging.”

So, here’s my latest one: Nicki Minaj in her newly-released clip for “High School,” featuring Lil Wayne. (Watch below.)

And there’s no good transition to get into this, so I’ll just say it: This clip includes literally the most awkward implied sex scene ever. I say “implied” only because the pair made it QUITE CLEAR that there was no: kissing, unauthorized touching, cuddling, etc happening on set. So I guess it was a cool thing to do in the video, but it seems kind of pointless since they both went so out of their way to tell the media how outrageous it was to pretend to be flirting and romping around in bed together.  They really went the extra mile to make it look so awkwardly unnatural that no one would get the wrong idea. Which doesn’t make any sense at all.

Anyway, here we go. Hit play on the video above and find out how to dupe her style (featuring Herve Leger, Versace, Hermes, Alexander Wang, Agent Provocateur, etc etc etc – I DIE. WE DIE.) Notice the “Similar here”s, too, for cheaper alternatives to the designer duds. I also want to shout out to her GAWJUS natural makeup look in the clip…hoping she continues to look this flawless and doesn’t revert back into the dark, dark depths of Hello-Kitty-neon-glitter-wig-tutu time.

*It was hard to find cheapo-versions of sandals like these. You get what you pay for, I suppose…Prada and Valentino both have similar styles this season that at least don’t cross the $1000 line.

P.S. If you’re super confused about what’s even happening in the video (like I was when I first watched it…five times in a row…), check out this wrap-up that I wrote for my other job. This is less of a shameless plug, and more of an I-don’t-want-to-rewrite-this-and-also-don’t-want-to-copy-it-and-plagiarize-and-get-fired. But still potentially helpful.

P.P.S. Shout out to all the dudes reading this wondering how you can snag Tunechi’s “High School” look – I got you covered. All you need is one of these bad boys below (image clicks through to where you can buy ;))
