The BET Awards: A Night of Insane Jackets

1 Jul

The BET Awards were last night, and while the show aims to celebrate the best in black entertainment, the real stars of the show were the crazy jackets sported by performers.

This style trend transcends generations, with everyone from Miguel to Stevie Wonder stepping out in their most outrageous garb. R. Kelly even wore a hat to match his crazy jacket.

In the awards show spirit, I’m here to dish out some well-deserved recognition to the artists who put forth that little something extra in the form of a loud jacket.

1. 2 Chainz – Most On-Trend

Fringe is really in right now. Have you seen Tumblr lately?

2. Miguel – Most Unconventional Embellishment

Is that human hair on Miguel’s shoulders?

3. R. Kelly – Scariest Jacket

I like to imagine that he spent hours sitting in front of Lifetime hand studding the jacket himself.

4. Stevie Wonder – Best Use of Non Sequitur Appliques

Stevie’s always been really into tribal prints, but lately he’s been going bold by wearing bizarre aboriginal-type masks on his jackets.

5. Justin Timberlake – Best Secretly Crazy Jacket

At first glance, his sport coat looks pretty standard. Upon closer inspection, however, one may see that the “Suit & Tie” singer’s shiny black textured jacket is hardly standard.

6. Charlie Wilson – Most Colorful

Because, duh.

Kanye Teamed Up With Scott Disick For This Thing and It’s the Best Thing Ever

18 Jun

So, in what I consider to be the best collaboration of the modern day, Kanye West has cast Scott Disick, his baby-mama’s sister’s baby-daddy (aka Kourtney Kardashian’s BF), in an American Psycho-inspired promo clip for Yeezus.

AND, as a bonus, we also get Keeping Up With the Kardashians regular Jonathan Cheban (you know, the one who always rescues Kim during her times of emotional trauma).

The pair play out a Kanye-fied version of the “Huey Lewis and the News” scene from the original flick, but really all that I can focus on or care about is Scott Disick owning the shit out of his obscenely terrible acting skills and just generally being a boss because he doesn’t even care that he sucks since it doesn’t even matter.

Because really, at the end of the day, the true measure of personal value is whether or not you get to hang out with Kanye.

Quote of the Week: Yeezus West

12 Jun

Everyone was just enjoying a great happy time at Kanye West’s Yeezus listening party in New York on Monday night when he dropped this one on ’em…

Top 5 May Favorites

7 Jun

Let’s keep this one short and sweet since I’m already a week behind. SORRY, EVERYONE WHO READS THIS. Here are my favorite things from last month:

5. Ariana Grande

Even though Mac Miller is on it, “The Way” practically became my favorite song the first time I heard it. Not only is the Mariah Carey-influenced jam totally designed for summertime, but Grande seemingly came out of nowhere with this debut single, and then just totally smashed everyone with it. Love of my life Demi Lovato even endorses her! Girl can SING.

Check out this video (below) of her doing impressions, including Britney Spears and Shakira. Nuts. AND – get this – this clip was posted in 2010. As in, it took everyone over three years to even notice that this girl is cray-talented.

4. The Catholic League calls David Bowie a “senior citizen”

Full quote: “The switch-hitting, bisexual, senior citizen from London has resurfaced…”

I can’t be the only one who finds this combination of words hilarious.

3. Daft Punk’s Random Access Memories

Definitely a highlight of this month (it dropped May 17), the album has potential to leave a serious impression on 2013 year-end album lists…

2. Ke$ha: My Crazy Beautiful Life

The 6-episode series (which admittedly premiered at the end of April) follows Ke$ha around on tour for two years, packing all the urine-drinking craziness into little half-hour spots each week (yes, that screen grab is what you think it is.) It was actually filmed by her brother, Lagan, and honestly, truly, really shows the singer in a relatable light through the ups and downs of proving herself to the music industry (and the world!!!!) Pop stars are obviously just like you and me (…she said as she watched Ke$ha do things like hang out with Steven Tyler and walk around Hollywood in a red velvet suit.)

1. Yeezus revealed!

Yeezus is soon to be upon us! In celebration, I may be doing a “Countdown to Yeezus” honoring Mr. West himself, but I’m not 100% sure if I want to feed his ego even more than the world already is by accepting an album titled “Yeezus” in the first place…

Guess I’ll mull over that one for a couple days.

The New Kanye West and Lil Wayne Features No One Knows About

26 May

WestBam-Gotterstrasse

When talent as big as Kanye West or Lil Wayne lend their verses to a track, it’s pretty hard to miss. Many an artist has risen to fame with the endorsement of one of these rappers as a feature on a breakout song, and fans flock to any new rhymes from the moguls, even if over another MC’s tune.

That’s why I was shocked to see both Kanye and Weezy’s names appear amidst the track list of German producer WestBam’s latest effort, Götterstrasse.

Not only is the mashup of a techno legend with two contemporary rappers a little weird, but it’s even more weird that no one seems to know that it even exists.

WestBam’s career spans back to 1988, when he released his first of 11 full-lengths. While he’s found massive success overseas, his popularity stateside has been a little more minimal – so much so that Götterstrasse is near-impossible to find in American retail outlets (luckily, snippets are available to stream on WestBam’s Facebook page.)

Leave it to YouTubers to upload pieces of the record to the web for those of us who can’t get our hands on the real thing. Check out Wayne on “Kick it Like a Sensei” and Kanye on “Radio Siberia,” below:

UPDATE 6/12/13: The YouTube upload of “Radio Siberia” was removed by the user, so here’s a snippet from the official WestBam SoundCloud:

Top 5 April Favorites

Pop Jumper April Favorites

It’s the end of the month, and you know what that means (JK, no, you actually don’t): the first installment of my monthly faves! This is self-explanatory; read on!

5. RiRi Woo

The first product shots of Rihanna’s new lipstick for MAC Costemtics have hit the web! RiRi Woo is a signature red shade based on MAC’s cult fave Ruby Woo – this time formulated to perfectly match the rest of RiRi’s capsule collection AND inscribed with her signature on the product itself. Our girl will be exclusively rocking the collection on her Diamonds World Tour, so fans looking to nab her beauty look will be able to purchase all the same products she’s using on stage. For me, though, the cute packaging is enough to make me want it.

4. Justin Timberlake’s “Mirrors”

While the video for this song, also out this month, doesn’t really do it for me, the track itself is on virtually permanent repeat on my Spotify playlist. I’m convinced that producer Timbaland must be some kind of voodoo wizard whose power only extends to JT – not that he’s not ALWAYS a great producer (because he is), but whenever those two come together it’s like you know it’ll be a hit before you even have to hit play (Ahem, “Cry Me a River“/”SexyBack“/”Carry Out“)

3. Ke$ha’s New Look

Ke$ha has morphed into a different human…has anyone else noticed this? Why doesn’t she look crazy anymore? Although I’m literally in love with her new look, something about this is unsettling. This isn’t Ke$ha. Who are you and what have you done with our Jack-teeth-brushing-dying-young party animal?

The photo above is from her recent Jimmy Kimmel appearance (she removes her glasses for the interview, confirming that this is, indeed Ke$ha.) Honestly, if you told me the girl pictured was a celebrity, but didn’t say who, I can’t say I’d be able to ID her. That’s really bad for a music writer, but come on! Look at her!

Check out some more snaps from the past few months below:

Also jumping on the natural beauty train this month (and KILLING IT) is honorable mention Nicki Minaj. Peep her in her “High School” video and Elle cover.

2. AFI Returns(!!!)

2006-era TRL darlings AFI are back after a(n unofficial) hiatus. They posted a teaser trailer to their YouTube video after being 100% inactive across all online media for probably about four years. The thing about it, though, is that it doesn’t say exactly what the teaser is for. Some moody black-and-white shots of front man Davey Havok walking down a hallway with a monologue voice over culminate in title screens saying “A Fire Inside” and “September 2013.”

While various music sites are reporting this as confirmation of the band’s long-awaited ninth album, fans on the official message board (YES, my inner 14-year-old AFI fan club member is showing. So what.) are no where near as optimistic. Maybe a tour. Maybe this is a teaser for a bigger announcement in September (does that even make any sense at all?)

Either way, NOTHING is confirmed, so what I’m basically saying is to ignore the shit other sites are posting about it.

As AFI’s number one fan (if you haven’t already figured it out), I can tell you one thing: this band loves to fuck with fans and use social media and the internet to spread really cryptic (literally) messages and e-treasure hunts that almost never lead to where you think you’re going. (I bold-ed that because you should really click on it.)

1. Jay-Z’s 2013 Made in America Lineup

Well, if my GIF post about this wasn’t enough of a giveaway, I am TOTALLY STOKED on this year’s lineup. Might even warrant a trip to Philly. It really speaks for itself.

The Top 5 Quotes From This Interview With an On-the-Rise 16-Year-Old Swedish Rapper

25 Apr

Yung Lean

Vice‘s Noisey did an exclusive interview with viral phenom Yung Lean, who, to me, is really a mashup of Lil B and the 16-year-old version of Ninja from Die Antwoord, if they were also Swedish (listen to my fave track below).

Despite being an import from half way around the world, Yung Lean has used his East Bay influence to his advantage, and nabbed a contract with E-40‘s son Issue’s Teaholics label. Is this even real? What is real?

Given the current climate of hip-hop, it’s plausible this could become a real thing (this is my nice way of criticizing the way the Internet has made it okay for Brooke Candy to exist.)

Either way, this kid is entertaining as F in this interview, and his beats are ten-hundred-times better than Brooke Candy.

Hear him on SoundCloud and YouTube, and read on to get to know him a little better…(keep in mind this is all coming out of a 16-year-old Swedish boy’s mouth. In case you forgot.)

1. On rap shows in Stockholm: “I’m not 18 so I can’t go to any shows.”

2. On girls: “We have plenty of hoes. That’s all you need to know.”

3. On girls in his district of Stockholm: “…they’re into apple cider. They’re pretty lame. We ain’t about those hoes.”

4. On New York City: “Arizona [Iced Tea] was very cheap, so was Koolaid.”

5. On whether he’s “into drugs”: “This is just very awkward.”
