My Top 5 Favorite Teen Boy Pop Songs Right Now

19 Jun

Because this is definitely its own genre. Whether you’re a seasoned Belieber or a hip-hop head just tryna find your softer side, here’s a sampling of songs on my playlist right now.

5. Austin Mahone – Say Somethin

Not that new, BUT it’s still stuck in my head, which is what counts. If you don’t already know about Austin Mahone, now you know.

4. The Wanted* – Warzone

A boy band in a desolate landscape with a piano and things that are on fire – sounds familiar.

3. One Direction – One Thing

I really don’t understand why 1D is more popular than The Wanted, but this song a classic in the teen boy pop genre.

2. Justin Bieber – All Around the World

Video is lackluster, but the song is catchy and includes a verse from Ludacris where he says stuff like “hate may win some battles, but love wins in the end.”

1. The Wanted – I Found You

Protagonist Nathan Sykes chumps a girl by making out with her to steal a key out of her pocket à la Britney Spears the flight attendant in “Toxic.” I’m now realizing that ripping off 2000’s era pop videos seems to be a recurring thing for the boys, but just let’s call it “inspiration” and not “unoriginality.”

*Technically, all members of The Wanted are actually grown-ups in their early- to mid-twenties. They still belong on this list, though, let’s be real.

Kanye Teamed Up With Scott Disick For This Thing and It’s the Best Thing Ever

18 Jun

So, in what I consider to be the best collaboration of the modern day, Kanye West has cast Scott Disick, his baby-mama’s sister’s baby-daddy (aka Kourtney Kardashian’s BF), in an American Psycho-inspired promo clip for Yeezus.

AND, as a bonus, we also get Keeping Up With the Kardashians regular Jonathan Cheban (you know, the one who always rescues Kim during her times of emotional trauma).

The pair play out a Kanye-fied version of the “Huey Lewis and the News” scene from the original flick, but really all that I can focus on or care about is Scott Disick owning the shit out of his obscenely terrible acting skills and just generally being a boss because he doesn’t even care that he sucks since it doesn’t even matter.

Because really, at the end of the day, the true measure of personal value is whether or not you get to hang out with Kanye.

What the Hell is Justin Bieber Doing on Twitter Right Now? [UPDATED]

UPDATE: It was some kind of weird-ass prank only a 19-year-old could think is funny. More here.

Quote of the Week: Yeezus West

Everyone was just enjoying a great happy time at Kanye West’s Yeezus listening party in New York on Monday night when he dropped this one on ’em…

Top 5 May Favorites

7 Jun

Let’s keep this one short and sweet since I’m already a week behind. SORRY, EVERYONE WHO READS THIS. Here are my favorite things from last month:

5. Ariana Grande

Even though Mac Miller is on it, “The Way” practically became my favorite song the first time I heard it. Not only is the Mariah Carey-influenced jam totally designed for summertime, but Grande seemingly came out of nowhere with this debut single, and then just totally smashed everyone with it. Love of my life Demi Lovato even endorses her! Girl can SING.

Check out this video (below) of her doing impressions, including Britney Spears and Shakira. Nuts. AND – get this – this clip was posted in 2010. As in, it took everyone over three years to even notice that this girl is cray-talented.

4. The Catholic League calls David Bowie a “senior citizen”

Full quote: “The switch-hitting, bisexual, senior citizen from London has resurfaced…”

I can’t be the only one who finds this combination of words hilarious.

3. Daft Punk’s Random Access Memories

Definitely a highlight of this month (it dropped May 17), the album has potential to leave a serious impression on 2013 year-end album lists…

2. Ke$ha: My Crazy Beautiful Life

The 6-episode series (which admittedly premiered at the end of April) follows Ke$ha around on tour for two years, packing all the urine-drinking craziness into little half-hour spots each week (yes, that screen grab is what you think it is.) It was actually filmed by her brother, Lagan, and honestly, truly, really shows the singer in a relatable light through the ups and downs of proving herself to the music industry (and the world!!!!) Pop stars are obviously just like you and me (…she said as she watched Ke$ha do things like hang out with Steven Tyler and walk around Hollywood in a red velvet suit.)

1. Yeezus revealed!

Yeezus is soon to be upon us! In celebration, I may be doing a “Countdown to Yeezus” honoring Mr. West himself, but I’m not 100% sure if I want to feed his ego even more than the world already is by accepting an album titled “Yeezus” in the first place…

Guess I’ll mull over that one for a couple days.

Just Can’t Get Enough… “Popular Song”

6 Jun

Ariana Grande is my new obsession! And 16-year-old me is elated at Mika’s return to catchy pop realness.

Check out this match made in heaven: “Popular Song” by Mika ft. Ariana Grande.

An Open Letter to Mariah Carey and Miguel’s #Hashtag

29 May

#Beautiful

I can’t exactly put my finger on why it is that typing the phrase “#Beautiful” into my Spotify search bar makes me feel like an asshole, but it does. I can say that the moment I hit enter, I looked back at it and just thought, Really, world? This is what it’s come to?

#Beautiful

Of course, they’re not the first to capitalize on the hashtag phenom…just take a look at #will.i.am.

And while I’m here, can we all just agree that the album art straight looks like a high school graphic design class project? What is that butterfly graphic on the bottom? You can’t try to be all 2013 on us with the hashtag thing, and then this is font you use. And what is Mimi even doing right there? Okay, done. Listen below:
